This book is a quick but fairly thorough retelling of the life of Saigo Takamori, often called the last samurai of Japan. The book does a great job of explaining Saigo's character while also explaining larger events going on in Japan during his life. The author show Saigo as a complex mix of old and new in Japan, encourage reform while also being very traditional. The book clearly explains Saigo's thoughts and philosophical influences to help you really understand the man and the world he was part of.The only serious fault is the end of the book, or lack of one. There is little discussion about the lasting impact of Saigo or what happened next after his final battle. The "conclusion" of the book is wrapped up in 2 pages, a pretty sad finale. The editor should have recommended that the author add some depth to the end of the book. Readers will need to look elsewhere to have answers to these questions, leaving the book somewhat incomplete.

If you saw the film "The Last Samurai" and have not studied much Japanese history, you have a long way to go before you can appreciate this book or the larger than life story of Saigo Takamori. This is an incredible story, but I can sympathize with people who are unfamiliar with Japanese words and history, and if you are in that category you may not get the most out of this outstanding book.If you are new to Japanese history, I suggest you begin with Eiji Yoshikawa's historical fiction masterpiece "Taiko", which is way better than the very disjointed "Shogun". Taiko is a good introduction into The Way. From there, check out John Steven's, "The Sword of No Sword: Life of the master Warrior Tesshu". Tesshu has a great story where he rides across the DMZ carrying a Shogunate message right past the Imperial guards and into Saigo's command tent during a meeting of the generals, without being stopped! Saigo was so struck by this bold act, he received the message and allowed Tesshu to return back to the enemy force. The two of them were truly giants among men.Saigo's life is the story of a self-made man who started out poor but had exceptional ability, and consistently displayed a superior character in the face of adversity. The movie touches on the tension of the times, but for a man like Saigo, it was a complete upheaval of everything he had known and taken for granted growing up. During this period the ruling Samurai class was forcefully being exchanged by the lowest class, the Merchants, with the support of western influence (hence, the movie).Aside from the life of Saigo, what I found very interesting in the book is the numerous descriptions of Satsuma, which sits on the southern tip of western Japan. This province has a unique place in Japanese history, was never actually defeated even after the battles of Sekigahara and Osaka, and this book gives some incredible insight into what made Satsuma so formidable.Ultimately this book is about the man, and has little if anything to do with the movie. I enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend it.

interested in Japanese lore and history of the Samurai, then this is a great book for your library. It details with the final conflict in the last Civil War in Japan that solidified the Emperor Meiji's reign at a time when he had decided to reform his nation into one of advanced power and prestige in his attempt to bring Japan into the modern world. As with Cruise's movie, "The Last Samurai" this is a conflict between two sides fighting for essentially the same thing - the soul of Japan. The cost of this conflict was a loss of military experts with centuries of experience that could really have made the difference with the construction of a national military force., had not the Samurai been intransigent in their opposition to technical and personnel changes to the art of war in Japan. That said, it is a fantastic historical example of the Samurai living and dying to the expectations of Bushido. I imagine, Emperor Meiji mourned the loss of such a fantastic part of his history and power, not to mention the loss of so many who could have aided his reformation. I recommend this book for lovers of Japan and its martial history.

Ravina's "The Last Samurai" is a wonderful account of the life of a remarkable man. I felt that I really got a sense of the sort of person Saigo was. It was readable, but at the same time rich with specific detail and free of any condescending, orientalized nonsense (unlike the film of the same name). If I have any complaints, I wish he had lingered more on the lives of the people surrounding Saigo; for example Sakamoto Ryouma, whose death isn't even mentioned. Not that he was under any obligation to do so; there's just relatively little English literature on the Bakamatsu period, and since the book isn't overly long, it seems like he could have provided more context. Still, what's here is exceptional. Definitely recommended!

While a true fan of the Samurai movies may enjoy reading about the life and times of the last Samurai, those looking for a "real life" account of the Characters found in the "last Samurai movie" will be sorely disappointed. The first chapter starts out alright, but gets pretty dry with a great number of names, places, dates, and facts, all of which also read pretty foreign to the average reader. Its not too unlike trying to read the old testament, book of numbers or book of kings. However, a fan of politics will certainly appreciate it. The life of Saigo Takamori was one of a civil servent - imagine reading about the life and times of your postal carrier. However, it improves if you get throught the first 2 chapters.
